Business intelligence analyst interview questions
Use these suggested interview exercises to practice explaining assumptions, methods and validation. They are not a list of questions guaranteed to appear in an interview. The employer’s current requirements and assessment instructions take precedence.
Before you practice
Read the job description. Identify the responsibilities you would own. Ask about the assessment format, time limit, data, allowed tools and AI-assistance policy. Practice with public or synthetic data, and be ready to explain a step without relying on an assistant’s output.
How would you define a revenue dashboard?
Practice scenario: Sales and finance report different totals for the same month. Explain what you would ask before choosing which report to change.
What to explain: Compare booked revenue, payments, refunds, tax treatment, currency and time zones. Identify the agreed business owner and definition. Reconcile the source populations before fixing a visual. State which decision the dashboard supports and how definition changes will be communicated.
Why did a join change the total?
Practice scenario: Orders are joined to a customer-history table with multiple rows per customer. The total doubles. Describe a correction.
What to explain: Identify the grain and cardinality of each table. Choose the relevant customer version or aggregate appropriately before the join, then verify keys and totals. DISTINCT is not a universal fix; it can hide a modeling error while removing legitimate records.
How would you share and maintain the report?
Practice scenario: A team wants a scheduled dashboard with different access for managers and analysts. Explain the checks before publication.
What to explain: Clarify data permissions, audience, refresh expectations and ownership. Verify the platform’s sharing requirements and test access with the intended viewer roles. Document definitions and the procedure for a broken refresh. Do not assume a locally correct report is accessible or safe for every reader.
Review your answer
Check whether you defined the question, justified the method and proposed a way to verify the result. Include a failure case and a limitation. Our suggested rubric assesses reasoning and evidence; it is not an employer’s official scoring system.
